Make Your Own Salsa!

Fresh at the store. That’s a lot of plastic!

Why am I talking about salsa? Well, it’s one of the regular things my family purchases every week. When you go to the store to buy salsa, you have two options: you can buy it in the mass produced glass jars or buy it fresh in the produce section – which is always in plastic! The glass jars are better, but they’ve been sitting on the shelves forever and seem to never expire – which always seems kind of gross.

So me and my mom found a really easy recipe for salsa. It also tastes way better than the bought version! It’s only 5 simple ingredients: Tomatoes, cilantro, an onion, lime juice, and chili pepper! All you need is those ingredients! If you have a Cuisinart or something like it, great, but if not, you can still fix it pretty fast. There is a whole page on for different types of salsa recipes, (<– theres the link for that page) like mango salsa, corn salsa, avocado salsa and so much more!

Ingredients for the one we made: (From

  • 3 cups diced seeded tomato
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1/3 cup diced seeded jalapeño pepper (1 large)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • Salt to taste

  1. Homemade salsa is one thousand times more delicious than store-bought! Way to go! I try to get in a canning session at the end of tomato season to make a big batch of salsa. Too good.
